Description
Club 3000 is dedicated to protecting the community health and welfare; educating Ohioans about risk factors related to landfill contamination; preventing leachate pollution in groundwater aquifer sources; preventing air and noise pollution; monitoring and inspecting landfill operations, procedures and practices; advocating for safe storage of municipal solid waste ("MSW"); and encouraging alternative energies and recycling.
Club 3000 is a party to a binding inspection and monitoring contract with Republic Services' Countywide landfill located in Stark County, Ohio. Club 3000 has regularly inspected and monitored this landfill for roughly 15 years, and has located hazardous waste (e.g. lead), and radioactive waste (e.g., iodine-131) dumped into this landfill. A recent decision by the Ohio 5th District Court of Appeals currently jeopardizes Club 3000's right and ability to effectively inspect and monitor this landfill's activities as it expands beyond the originally contemplated boundaries.
Club 3000 has appealed this expansion to the Environmental Review Appeals Commission ("ERAC"), and is involved in a number of other civil cases pending in Ohio courts related to Republic Services' Countywide lanfill expansion attempts.
