It is the mission of the Jackson Heights-Elmhurst Kehillah ("the Kehillah") to promote and strengthen the interests of the Jewish community in Western Queens (herein after called the "service area") primarily but not exclusively to Jackson Heights and Elmhurst.
The Kehillah shall:
1. Promote unity among people of every religious, philosophical and organizational persuasion by focusing on issues and programs of common interest and concerns.
2. Assist members of the community to obtain needed social, medical, recreational, occupational, educational, economic and cultural services for residents, regardless of creed, age, religion, color, disability national origin, gender, marital status or sexual orientation.
3. Promote neighborhood stabilization by working with local community organizations in an effort to improve our neighborhood's housing stock, encourage commercial development and improving the delivery of essential services.
4. Strengthen intergroup relations by reaching out to ethnic, religious, community and other groups within our service area to develop multi-cultural programs, broad-based coalitions and intergroup dialogues.
Only when it is consistent with the laws and statutes of the United States, the State and the City of New York, the Kehillah shall strive to be true to its history by:
-Enhancing Jewish education and cultural life in its service area by developing and/or supporting programs which appeal to a broad segment of the Jewish community.
-Developing programs designed to encourage a deeper understanding and appreciation of Judaism and Jewish heritage aimed at the general community and at attracting and integrating unaffiliated Jews into Jewish communal experience.
-Cooperate with and support the UJA-Federation campaign.
We operate a number of social service programs that help people in need. We have an emergency kosher food shelf, a kosher meals-on-wheels program and a monthly food pantry. We teach immigrants and refugees English language skills in ESL classes. We also offer one-on-one tutoring to small businesses in using computer applications. We actively cooperate with other neighborhood social service organizations. The Kehillah never charge for its services.
