Mission Statement

Our goal is to do for the African American community what Spielberg and the Shoah Foundation have done so ably for the Jewish community. This will be done via a series of video-recorded, first-hand accounts of historical perspectives of individual African Americans telling their own stories and putting those stories on-line. We want to provide living proof that African American history did not begin or end with the civil rights movement, that The HistoryMakers number in the thousands and that their names are not just Harriet Tubman, W.E.B. DuBois, Martin Luther King, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Ella Fitzgerald and Michael Jordan.

The HistoryMakers' video archives will consist of video recorded accounts of both well-known and unsung African Americans. The HistoryMakers will be asked to tell their stories.

Description

The HistoryMakers is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit educational institution committed to preserving, developing and providing easy access to an internationally recognized archival collection of thousands of African American video oral histories. The purpose of this archive is to educate and to show the breadth and depth of this important American history as told by the first person; to highlight the accomplishments of individual African Americans across a variety of disciplines; to pay tribute to those who have played a role in African American-led movements and/or organizations; and to preserve this material for generations to come, thus creating a priceless collection.
