Mission Statement

Florida is a Caribbean State. The Florida Association for Volunteer Action in the Caribbean and the Americas (FAVACA) offers is a unique development partnership with the Caribbean and Central America. Its aim is, through training and technical assistance, to improve environmental, social and economic conditions in the region. Volunteers are top experts in their fields and are thus able to impart invaluable knowledge and information to their international counterparts.

Description

FAVACA establishes sustainable partnerships between non-governmental organizations, universities, government agencies and businesses in Florida and the Caribbean and Latin America. In response to requests from partner organizations throughout the region, FAVACA has conducted more than 2,500 technical assistance and training volunteer missions reaching approximately 50,000 individuals in 30 countries over the past 25 years- living proof of Florida's commitment to the well-being of the region. These activities also help to mitigate threats to Florida's agriculture, health, and the environment before they reach critical proportions.

I became interested in volunteering with FAVACA because of its approach of connecting the local to the global. The organization recognizes that a stronger connection can be made between Floridians and communities in the Caribbean and Latin America. I personally have learned a great deal about operating a nonprofit organization as well as the various issues local communities face ranging from supply chain management for Nicaraguan dairy farmers to beekeeping in Haiti. Volunteering with FAVACA is an awarding opportunity and a great experience for anyone interested in being involved with the organization.

Volunteering with FAVACA creates MASSIVE impact for marginalized communities throughout the Caribbean. With FAVACA I have been able to experience change abroad and at home as I was a part of trainings to create economic opportunities in Colombia which also promotes trade in my home of Florida. I recently spent 2 weeks on the North Coast of Colombia speaking with artisans about marketing, exports, and design. Add your resume to the FAVACA Volunteer Corps database.
