Currently there are eight sites located across CA that are affiliated with the UC Office of the President's Academic Centers of Excellence. The Bay Area site is located at the East County Boys and Girls Club in Pittsburg, CA. The Academic Center of Excellence aims to build a college going culture in the East Bay. Our objectives are 1.) To promote a college-going culture among students in this low income community. 2.) To increase their academic competitiveness 3.) To increase the number of students who enroll in two-and four-year institutions of higher education.
Jacqueline M. Mimms and Leona Cheesebourough established the Academic Centers of Excellence in 2001. The University of CA has established 8 Academic Centers of Excellence in low-income under-served urban communities across CA. Since inception, these centers have served over 4,000 youth.
The Academic Center of Excellence works in partnership with the First Baptist Church and the East County Boys and Girls Club to provide academic services for students. Services include tutoring, parental involvement and college admissions workshops, and standaridized test preparation.
