Mission Statement

The Northwest African American Museum is a vibrant community gathering place, a place where youth, adults and families can honor the past and articulate the future. The Museum documents and exhibits the unique historical and cultural experiences of African Americans in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. The Museum is a generative institution capturing history and culture as it occurs, synthesizing what it means for today and tomorrow.

What does it mean to be African American in the Pacific Northwest? It is a beautiful range of colors and hues -- a diversity of experiences and locations. African Americans come from a variety of countries of origin, both known and unknown representing an assortment of religions, a staggering array of occupations, a multitude of co-workers, neighbors, friends and families, and an ever evolving community that continues to shape and reshape the human experience in the Pacific Northwest region. The Northwest African American Museum invites you to explore this continually changing story, for it is yours, it is mine, it is all of ours.

The volunteer manager Leilani is very organized, friendly, and fun to work with. Ditto for all the staff and many volunteers they rely on. The NAAM is a great museum and I highly recommend volunteering and attending!
