Mission Statement

Cancer Companion Pets (CCP) is a small non profit organization, based in the Bay Area with the mission of helping cancer survivors reach optimal health through pet companionship. We assist individuals affected by cancer through providing free pet related support services. We also support the adoption of rescue/shelter pets. We are currently focused on providing our services in the San Jose metropolitan area.

Description

People afflicted with cancer have needs beyond what traditional medicine can treat, and seek and require comfort and companionship during and after treatment. As medical science advances, more people are living with cancer for longer periods of time. The need for a wide range of cancer support services for this population is increasing. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 1,638,910 new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2012.

The companionship of a pet provides comfort in the form of love, compassion, normalcy and stress relief to people afflicted with cancer. Despite scientific research to support these facts 4-5 million dogs and cats are euthanized in shelters across the United States 3 each year.

Cancer Companion Pets matches the need for more cancer support services with the need for finding more homes for shelter pets.

When an individual is diagnosed with cancer or going through cancer treatment, taking care of their pet may present a challenge. In some cases, these pets are surrendered to a local shelter, and often euthanized.

Cancer Companion Pets will provide pet support services with the goal of keeping companion pets with cancer survivors and preventing beloved pets from ending up at a local animal shelter.
