Mission Statement

Striving Upward Creating Champions through Education and Social Skills TM S.U.C.C.E.S.S.TM

The mission of the S.U.C.C.E.S.S.non-profit after school program is to promote literacy through education by foster in students a positive sense of self-esteem and an enthusiasm for lifelong learning. S.U.C.C.E.S.S. aims to nurture individual students by challenging them to explore and develop their potential resulting in decreasing the rising illiteracy and drop out rates. When provided with encouragement, nurturance, and motivation, students can thrive academically and socially.

Description

Students who do not excel in school often become discouraged, which can leads to lower academic performance. Research reveals discouraged students frequently stop trying which often results in higher dropout rates and increased illiteracy. However, research also indicates that students respond to encouragement. Unlike other excel programs, which focuses on the students achieving and mastering academics, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. TM provides incentives to students for academic improvement as well as personal growth development.

What separates S.U.C.C.E.S.S. from all other incentive programs is it rewards students based on THEIR IMPROVEMENT in addition to their EXCELLENCE. A student in the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. program with six D's the first semester could receive the Outstanding Student Award because the D's improved to C's, thus recognizing this student for his or her outstanding personal accomplishment.

The S.U.C.C.E.S.S. after school program focuses on 1st through 12th graders since statistics show the importance of early intervention. Research also suggest students who are still struggling academically in 4th and 5th grades frequently become discouraged. Therefore, it is imperative to capture struggling students interest and energy by providing incentives to encourage progress, in spite of how difficult or frustrating school may become.

The S.U.C.C.E.S.S. program has expanded this year to include a summer program that places a strong emphasis on building and enhancing leadership skills. Thanks to collaborative efforts with The United States Navy the program will collectively mentor, develop, and hone the skills of our future leaders. Partnering with the Corpus Christi Police Athletic League (PAL) adds an athletic component to S.U.C.C.E.S.S. by providing students with critical life skills that focus on individual character development and the enhancement of physical fitness and self-discipline.

By combined academics and athletics S.U.C.C.E.S.S. has centered its effort on neighborhood where gang activity, drug use, poverty, and violent crime present the greatest risk to children and adolescents. Athletics are exciting activity that takes time and commitment to learn. Athletics is used as a vehicle to teach students the reward of practice and dedication.
