Mission Statement
The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.
Description
Relay For Life is an opportunity for individual communities to join the fight against cancer. Since cancer never sleeps, Relay is an organized event, where participants give up a night of sleep to experience the light of day and the dark of night to parallel the physical effects, emotions, and metnal state of a cancer patient. Teams of people camp around the track and take turns walking the track - although many participants do not stay the entire night. The evening is filled with fun activities, entertainment, bands, contests, food vendors, and a silent auction. We also begin the event by honoring cancer survivors with a special recognition dinner and a celebratory survivior lap. In addition, we recognize the caregivers of cancer patients with an honorary caregiver lap.
