Mission Statement
Las Angelitas del Pueblo exists to preserve and promote the knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the historical and cultural heritage of Los Angeles, giving particular attention to "El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument."
Description
Las Angelitas del Pueblo traces its roots to the summer of 1966. Originally starting out as giving bus tours of "old Los Angeles," by 1969 Las Angelitas del Pueblo was actually formed as an organization and presented the idea of giving free tours of the "old Plaza to the State Historical Commission. The commission accepted the proposal and a Visitors Center was officially opened and tours began on Sunday, June 8, 1969.
The concept was to provide educational and historically accurate walking tours of the Plaza and to continue bus tours and slide presentations. The original membership in Las Angelitas del Pueblo consisted of twenty dedicated, knowledgeable, energetic women volunteers. Since then many more historical minded women and men have joined the group and today there are over sixty active docents giving tours. In 1974, the California Historical Society selected Las Angelitas del Pueblo to receive their Annual Merit Award. Every year, over 11,000 men, women and children are given tours of the "old Plaza of Los Angeles." In 2004, Las Angelitas del Pueblo won the first ever Save Our History award from The History Channel.
