Surrounding students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
The Communities in Schools Mentor Program was formed to help address the needs of children to support personal and academic success.
The Renton Mentor Program is entirely school based and matches a trained adult volunteer with a child for one hour a week, once a week during the school day at specific schools within the Renton School District.
Mentors help a child become the person he or she chooses to be by interacting with the child over a period of time, establishing an open, friendly, and trusting relationship, encouraging the child to see school as a positive place, and to encourage life and academic successes. The focus is on the development of the relationship by participating in mutually agreeable activities such as playing board games, reading, or playing outside.
