Mission Statement

Our organization is pleased to be a part of the CMS MedicareRx Volunteer Initiative to help people with Medicare get the assistance they may need to benefit from Medicare's new prescription drug coverage. Organizations and volunteers nationwide have come together in the CMS MedicareRx Volunteer Initiative to help people with Medicare understand their options and make an informed, meaningful decision about their prescription drug plan options. The CMS MedicareRx Volunteer Initiative is sponsored by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Administration on Aging (AoA), and is committed to building an official corps of volunteers who are available to help people with Medicare in communities nationwide understand, choose and join a Medicare prescription drug plan if they choose.

Our organization is also continually recruiting and training Ombudsman Volunteers. These volunteers visit long-term care facilities as advocates for residents' rights. They talk to residents and assist them with any issues they are having within the facility. The volunteers are a vital part of the Ombudsman Program, and they are someone from the community who visits with residents at least one time a week.

Description

Our organization is providing free, one-on-one assistance to people with Medicare and their families via telephone and face-to-face sessions, public education presentations and other programs. Through the CMS MedicareRx Volunteer Initiative, volunteers at our organization will be given the opportunity to work directly with people with Medicare to help them understand their prescription drug plan options and join a plan that will best suit their prescription drug needs if they choose.

Those interested in becoming an Ombudsman Volunteer, must attend a two-day training offered by the Ombudsman Supervisors at Grand Gateway Area Aency on Aging. There is at least one training offered every quarter. Then they are certified by the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman office to visit a facility close to their home. The candidates must be free of conflict of interests, and must be able to remain objective in problem solving.
