Mission Statement

Roots of Development helps impoverished communities in Haiti acquire the financial resources and organizational skills they need to manage their own development. We promote an alternative approach to rural development by facilitating a process in which we bring together diverse representatives from a community, listen to their goals, and build on their inherent strengths to complete community-driven projects that foster greater independence.

Description

Roots of Development has partnered with APDAG (see video here) in Haiti to provide the tools that they need in their community to manage their own development. APDAG's priorities have included access to clean water, access to sanitation facilities, and the creation of social enterprises. In exceptional cases, such as the earthquake of 2010 and hurricanes of 2008 and 2012, we assist with emergency relief efforts. In every project we conduct, we analyze our actions to ensure that we do not create long term dependency.

We have helped thousands gain access to clean water while sharing new skills and engendering personal growth. We have helped APDAG start numerous small businesses to create jobs and independent revenue sources for their work. These new revenue sources will make APDAG less reliant upon international donors and foundations for funding.
