Mission Statement

The House, an organization focused on at-risk and disadvantaged youth, will open up its doors in two weeks, just outside Washington, D.C., in a community where close to 40,000 junior- and senior-high students reside. Inside our doors, young people will be given every chance to discover answers to their questions. They will find permission to dream or, in some instances, to dream again. The House is staffed with visionary leadership fully devoted to fun---the kind of fun that will foster confidence and self-esteem in the youth as well as a sense of deep belonging, both to their peers and to their community. We have built The House on the belief that teens who walk through our doors will uniquely experience relationships, which will provide them with the means to overcome the statistics that face their generation in America. Each week, The House will host hundreds of students after school between 3-6 pm, who will be encouraged to share and participate in such resources as a computer lab, an in-house gym, English as a second language (ESL) classes, tutoring, meals, drug prevention and sexual abstinence education, and mentoring.

Description

The House is dedicated to providing the needed influence of positive role models in the lives of our youth; mentors who will assist and encourage the young people to discover what direction they want for their futures and what options are available to them to achieve those goals. Our volunteer staff is also excited to shape the perceptions of todayâ  s students----to teach them the freedom of self-confidence and achievement instead of the chains of mediocrity and superficiality. The House will work with students in the areas of academics, recreation/leisure, and cultural and life-skills to develop and hone the skills and habits so necessary for each teen to realize his or her potential. The House is a network that asks every community, organization, and individual in the nation to help fulfill these promises to every young person. We are a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization funded by public and private contributions (tax deductible). You can play a vital role in the growth and healthy development of our Nationâ  s youth. Of course, caring adults are required to raise a child; however, the support that you can give is essential to ensure that every young person has the opportunity to succeed in life. Although we are a nascent organization and small in size, we are grand in vision with national aspirations. We know that people of prominence normally associate themselves with larger, well-known charitable organizations; however, we are asking you to recognize the contributions and potential of The House, and help us grow into an organization that will one day have a national impact on our youth.
