The 2005 - 2006 Oviedo High School wrestling season is set to begin soon. There is much excitement and anticipation as the Lions wrestling team begin the defense of their second 2004 FHSAA 6-A State Championship. Returning nine competitors from last year's team, the Lions are ranked in the nations top 20 in Amateur Wrestling News preseason ranking. Individual competitors ranked by Amateur Wrestling News are: Jason Robbins #7 at 160 lbs, David Green #6 at 189 lbs and Kenny Lester as the top high school wrestler in the nation in the 275 lb. weight class. One of the most significant events of the wrestling calendar is the annual Zac Jarzynka Memorial Ironman Tournament to be held December 28th & 29th. In only its fourth year this event has fast become one of the premier high school wrestling tournaments. In memory of our 2002 OHS team captain, the Ironman Tournament is intended to provide team and individual participants the maximum level of matches against high caliber competitors. Only the State Championship Series will provide Florida teams a greater competitive opportunity. The 24 team roster includes highly recognized Florida teams and teams from Georgia (5), Virginia (2), Ohio, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, and California. Sixteen of the 24 teams finished 2004 in top ten of their respective state competition. This is truly our most competitive tournament yet. Our second point of pride is the ability to recognize OHS seniors and other senior competitors through the award of scholarships for education beyond high school. The Zac Jarzynka Memorial Scholarship Fund has awarded thirteen scholarships totaling over $13,000 from the proceeds of the first two tournaments. The 24 head coaches will have the opportunity to nominate competing seniors based upon traits Zac's coaches use to describe him as a team member and leader. Dedication, Leadership, Sportsmanship, Selfless Service and Competitiveness. The Zac Jarzynka Memorial Ironman Tournament is a truly unique event. Twenty four teams from seven states, over 300 competitors wrestling up to five matches per day and the opportunity for senior student athletes to earn a scholarship. In the course of running the tournament we will host over 300 wrestlers; plus coaches, team staff and officials. The scoring of over 840 matches, operations of concessions and tournament administration will require us to fill over 300 volunteer commitments to staff the event. To meet this need we are asking your organization to consider assisting us in filling the staffing needs. The volunteer coordinator for this year's tournament is Andrea Christiansen (407-542-6120). She will contact you to discuss how you and your organization can support the OHS wrestling program and this event. Thank you for your consideration and support for this worthwhile community event that benefits Oviedo student athletes and honors the memory of Zac.
