Pickering Manor, Newtown’s premier center for senior living, opened in 1963 through the generosity of H. Russell Pickering who bequeathed his residence and a sum of money for the realization of a facility serving the "older citizens of Newtown and environs", as reported in the Newtown press. Pickering, whose father, Henry Y. Pickering founded Acme Oil Company and Keystone Refining Company, both taken over by Standard Oil, left the legacy for Pickering Manor. Russell embraced the true spirit of philanthropy, which cares for, nourishes, develops, or enhances humanity and human potential. His private initiative for public good, focused on galvanizing the efforts of Newtown’s community to transform his estate into a "Home" with the feeling of "home".
This legacy still rings true today. Pickering Manor is the result of that exceptional combination of persons who care and work together to reach the common goal of providing a safe and nurturing environment for our seniors so they can spend the remainder of their lives living in dignity. Our distinct non-profit facility is located in historic Newtown in beautiful Bucks County, PA and is owned and operated by the Community Welfare Council of Newtown. We are the only community-operated facility for seniors in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
