Mission Statement

The mission of Under the Baobab Tree is to support resource-poor communities in Mali to pioneer their own lasting social change and economic development. Under the Baobab Tree provides women with the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to design creative solutions to the problems they face and to improve the health and quality of life of their communities.

Description

In Mali, one of the poorest countries on the African continent, simple health literacy campaigns aimed at influencing the risky behavior of individuals have been an insufficient response to these health crises. Communities disempowered by lack of access to education, economic opportunities, health services, and infrastructure require more than basic health information to proactively address current and future health threats. To address these greater issues, what is needed is a fundamental transformation of social and economic UBT's program for women, Project Muso Ladamunen, focuses on developing not only health and hygiene skills to address immediate health crises, but also training in literacy, math, artisan skills and community organizing skills, so that participants can transform the social and economic inequalities at the roots of these health crises. All modules are designed so that participants can directly apply program material to address community problems. In addition, UBT supports community health via infrastructure development initiatives including access to potable water, microfinance, and medical care.
