Mission Statement

To help people improve their reading and writing skills so that they can achieve their full potential as community members, family members, workers, and life-long learners; to effect understanding and use of public libraries; to educate our communities on the importance of literacy.

Description

San Diego County has a great need for literacy services. The National Adult Literacy Survey (NALS) estimates that in San Diego County, 20% of adults (450,000 people) read at or below the 4th grade level. San Diego County Library is fortunate to be able to provide literacy services to our customers. Being able to read well empowers people to increase their skills in many areas, thereby increasing opportunities for personal growth and success. San Diego County Library helps build successful communities by promoting reading.
