Description

The Montessori-Based Demenita Program is a research-based method of working with older adults with dementia based on the philosophies of famed educator, Maria Montessori. For an older person who is experiencing memory loss, either from stroke, illness, or Alzheimer’s disease, the use of the Montessori Dementia Program helps preserve many skills while also stimulating the mind. Montessori methods are tools that help create the bridge to reconnect with people who may seem unreachable. By using these methods, the Montessori Dementia program gives older people the opportunity to use their hands and their five senses to activate and stimulate their minds. Research has shown that persons participating in Montessori activities tend to be more engaged with their environment and exhibit fewer signs of depression, anxiety, and agitation. This positive approach to Alzheimer’s care is a source of creativity and comfort to people with dementia and caregivers alike. The Montessori Philosophies: • Focuses on an individual’s abilities, not deficits • Engage in meaningful activities • Allow highest level of functioning possible • Enhance self-esteem • Provide meaningful, social roles
