Mission Statement

The YWCA of Richmond serves at-risk children with quality, comprehensive childcare and victims of domestic violence and sexual assault with rescue, recovery and life-rebuilding programs that foster emotional, social, and economic stability. Our vision is of a community that protects the vulnerable, reaches out to those in need, honors personal courage, celebrates successes of women, and embraces diversity and equality. Our goal is to empower women to live healthy, violence-free lives and to eliminate racism through the early education of children.

Description

Our programs include the Child Development Center, Sexual Assault Program and Domestic Violence Program. The YWCA has long been a source of quality childcare for low-income families, in addition to being Richmond's only provider of free care to the homeless. We are one of Richmond's largest Head Start sites, offering full-day, year-round comprehensive preschool programming. Through our Sexual Assault Program, victims of sexual receive support and referral. Sexual assault survivors face many challenges after a violent attack; women and men have difficulty coping with the abuse itself, as well as the invasive evidence recovery process and the demands of prosecution. Trained YWCA staff and volunteers are on call 24-hours a day to meet surviors in the emergency rooms of local hospitals and accompany them to court appearances. We offer sexual assault counseling to individuals and groups in our downtown building and at various locations in Richmond. Through our Domestic Violence Program, we operate two confidentially-located domestic violence shelters in the Richmond area. A woman and her children can gain access to the shelters at any time and stay as long as she is working toward her stated goals. While with us, women have access to childcare, counseling, case management, employment and legal assistance. All of these services are provided at no cost.
