Description

In 1890, Algonquin residents voted to incorporate their small community as a Village. Located along the Fox River, the Village grew from a population of 2,014 in 1960 to 23,276 in 2000. The Village operates under a Council/Manager form of government. It is governed by a President and six Trustees who are elected at large. The Village presently has 137 full time employees who assist in providing Village services, including police protection, water and sewer services, maintenance of Village parks and public facilities, building inspection and code enforcement, economic development, and recreation opportunities. Within the Village of Algonquin, each year new subdivisions bring thousands of new residents into the Village, placing additional demands for recreation and leisure services. The projected total â build outâ population for the Village of Algonquin (48,000) is likely to occur within the next ten to fifteen years. Obviously, with a growth rate of this magnitude, it is essential that the Village maximize its resources and offer additional programming to meet the current and future recreation needs of the community. In 2002, the Village of Algonquin recognized the need to begin recreation and leisure programming in the Village and hired a full-time Events and Recreation Coordinator. The Village of Algonquin has successfully published four catalogs containing a variety of recreation and leisure programming. These programs have included swimming lessons, summer camps, senior programs, sports programs and special events to name a few.
