Mission Statement

MISSION STATEMENT Colonial Youth and Family Services has a broad legislative mandate to promote the physical, emotional and social well being of youth under 21 and their family members. Its mission is to promote, establish and maintain a unified system of youth development and delinquency prevention services which assist youth to become productive, functional and fully integrated members of society. Through a coordinated, community-school development approach to the provision of direct and indirect youth services as well as youth advocacy efforts, Colonial Youth and Family Services seeks to ensure that appropriate services are made available to the greatest possible number of youth.

Description

Agency History and Background Colonial Youth and Family Services (CYFS) is a nonprofit, 501 (c) (3) offering a broad array of services to residents of the Town of Brookhaven since 1973. Colonial YFS was created in response to a need to address a serious lack of comprehensive, professional counseling and other services for children and families. The communities served by Colonial had undergone a severe change from a principally intact, single family, owner-occupied residential profile to one where homes were being foreclosed at an alarming rate, being purchased by absentee landlords and rented. Individual homes and entire segments of the community were allowed to deteriorate. New problems began to surface or were exacerbated; a high rate of single parent head of household, drugs, crime and gangs. The fallout filtered into every aspect of the community including the schools. Colonial is a â grass rootsâ organization created by a group of committed residents, community leaders, businesswomen and men and the school district. They saw these changes and the tremendous need for appropriate services. Thus was born Colonial Youth and Family Services. Through our services we strive to improve the quality of life in our community by providing a comprehensive continuum of care and support. CYFS services include: â ¢ Individual, group, family and crisis counseling. â ¢ Child abuse prevention services for families. â ¢ Pregnancy prevention and intervention services for adolescent. â ¢ Case management and education for adolescent parents. â ¢ Work in conjunction with Child Protective Service to provide court mandated services. â ¢ Work with high risk youth under PINS petition. (Persons in Need of Supervision) â ¢ Family support services, basic needs and advocacy. â ¢ Heating assistance program. â ¢ Home visits with families. â ¢ "camperships" for children. â ¢ Holiday assistance for families. â ¢ Elementary school-age child care program. â ¢ After-school recreation for children and adolescents. â ¢ Summer recreation program for children and adolescents. â ¢ Summer Day Camp for children. â ¢ Community Adolescent Volunteer Corps â ¢ Graffiti removal program. â ¢ Peer leadership training for adolescents. â ¢ Sponsored youth employment opportunities.
