Mission Statement

This project will provide opportunities for mentors to be matched with at-risk youth for the purpose of increasing academic performance and school bonding, encouraging truancy and drop-out reduction, and preventing violence and substance abuse. Youth will receive: academic support specific to their individual needs, career interest assessments, job shadowing opportunities, school-to-career planning and cultural/recreational opportunities.

Description

La Conexion is designed as an educational and relational mentoring service integrating the supportive mentoring relationship with opportunities to experience and participate in career areas related to personal interests. The mentoring relationship will also provide advocacy, transitional services and educational support. Youth will be selected from targeted elementary and middle schools within the Denver Public Schools, which were identified based on their high levels of non-proficient students, high percentage of free or reduced lunch, and lack of current prevention and intervention programs.
