Mission Statement

The English in the Workplace Program was developed over ten years ago to help University of Washington employees who speak English as a Second Language to receive classes twice a week without charge, and on work-release time. Textbooks are provided and classes are taught by faculty from Seattle Central Community College ESL program.

About 25 students participate each quarter, with a wide variety of English skill levels. The students are employed as custodial staff on the UW campus, and many are recent immigrants.

Description

We are looking for volunteers to assist the instructor with these classes. It's very helpful to be able to break the larger class into smaller groups.

Classes are held this quarter (Autumn 2012) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:45am to 1:15pm. The classes will continue through the academic year.

Previous volunteers for this program have enjoyed meeting and working with these employees, and learned as much as the students! The program also has a dynamite multi-cultural potluck celebration lunch at the end of the year.

Please consider helping out with this terrific program. It's a wonderful opportunity to give to your community, and help recent immigrants improve their ability of live and work in their new home country. Please contact Karen Long at 206-221-0220, or at klong@uw.edu if you are able to volunteer for one or two classes a week.

THANK YOU!
