Wonderful volunteer orientation! After attending, my perspective on issues facing Tacoma’s homeless men, women and children changed. Before, I believed that securing a safe place to sleep for the night was a relatively achievable task. Today I learned about the difficult challenges homeless people face when signing up for a meal or a safe retreat for the night. Frequently, individuals had to choose between exploring their surroundings in search of employment opportunities and signing up for a shelter service. I will not forget the powerful feelings of empathy and hope invoked that chilly Saturday afternoon. The connections made during the five hour presentation deepened my longtime desire to help our local homeless population.
