Mission Statement

To offer a quality education to a diverse community of Boston children through a neighborhood based school that integrates education with social services and health care programs for the benefit of students and their families that otherwise have limited public educational opportunities

Description

Founded in 1995 by local parents and community members, NHCS aims to offer a quality education to a diverse community of Boston children. NHCS accomplishes this mission as a neighborhood-based school that integrates education with social services and health care programs for the benefit of students and their families who otherwise have limited educational opportunities.

The school's "Succeed Anywhere" educational philosophy proposes that all NHCS students will be well prepared to enter a high quality public or private secondary school, including schools focused on college preparation, technical trades, or the creative arts. In pursuing this mission, NHCS commits to developing and sharing with other public schools innovative practices that improve public education for all students.

NHCS serves 400 students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. NHCS students come from hardworking urban families who want the best for their children. Students are chosen by lottery and reflect the diversity of Boston's neighborhoods. Over 70% of our students qualify as "low income" according to federal guidelines; over three-quarters are racial or ethnic minorities; almost 20% receive special education services; and, over one-third receive other counseling to address educational, social, emotional or physical needs.

Our full service program provides art and music classes, athletics, KidLab (an integration of science and art), after school programs, high school placement assistance, and access to academic specialists, social workers, a pediatrician, and a nurse, ensuring that our students will grow academically, socially and emotionally.
