Purpose: To provide a young person (13-21) in foster care with the academic support and motivation needed to graduate from high school or complete their GED. Position Summary Academic Mentors will meet with a student at the student’s foster home or a designated location in the community on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, depending on the needs of the young person. Academic Mentors will develop a positive relationship with the student, work to enhance the student’s academic skills, and promote productive academic habits. Providing help with homework and assisting with test preparation will be the primary tasks during the school year. These tasks will be completed in a way that encourages the student to become an independent learner. Academic Mentor Responsibilities Develop a positive relationship with the student Enhance the student’s organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills Incorporate study skills and time management techniques into sessions Work with students to complete assignments and prepare for tests Communicate with teachers to promote open communication and provide targeted sessions Build self-esteem and motivation Strive for mutual respect and serve as a positive role model Accept and relate to youth who may not share the volunteer’s lifestyle and values Report meeting times and student progress to HCP staff through emails, phone calls, monthly reports Maintain confidentiality regarding student work, conversations, and records Academic Mentor Qualifications Patient, flexible, and encouraging Consistent and dependable Works well with people from a variety of cultural, religious, and economic backgrounds Must have at least a high school diploma Have a clean driving record and background check Must be at least 18 years of age Willing to adhere to all Hope Center tutoring program policies and procedures Experience working with youth in an educational setting helpful but not required Must be able to establish and maintain a trusting and productive working relationship with young people and program staff Time Commitment Commit to working with the student through the end of the current school year, but ideally longer Volunteer will work with program staff and young person to develop a tutoring schedule that best fits the needs of the young person Attend an initial three-hour volunteer orientation training session Submit monthly time/activity reports and be willing to communicate regularly with program staff

Purpose To support a young person (age 16-24) in foster care or with a history in foster care, by driving them to and/or from their internship so that they can gain the work experience they need to become self-sufficient. Internship Program Summary The Hope Center at Pullen runs an internship program that places young people in paid positions at area nonprofits. Interns work for approximately 10 weeks for 10 hours per week. In addition to their responsibilities on the job site, the young person is paid to attend three job readiness classes and a job shadowing day. Interns will create a resume, prepare for and interview at the worksite, gain work experience, learn new skills to add to their resume, and build a professional network. Volunteer Responsibilities Volunteers will be matched with a young person who is completing an internship. Efforts will be made to match volunteers with interns who either live or work near the volunteer. Program staff will introduce the volunteer to the intern at an initial meeting which will take place either at The Hope Center or at the young person’s home. Depending on the volunteer’s availability, approximately, once or twice a week the volunteer will pick up the young person and drive them to the internship and/or drive them home from the internship. Requirements Commit to driving the young person at least one way, at least once per week for 10 weeks. Provide at least 24-hour notice to the intern and program staff if unable to drive on a particular day. Be at least 21 years old and have at least a high school diploma. Have a clean driving record and background check. Have a valid driver’s license, safe/reliable transportation, and proof of auto insurance with the HCP required levels. Communicate with the intern program staff assigned, and if necessary, the foster parent, through phone calls or text to confirm driving times. Be willing to communicate regularly with program staff. Be patient, flexible, and dependable. Be willing to adhere to all Hope Center at Pullen Mentoring Program policies/procedures.

Mentor Responsibilities Take the lead in supporting a young person through an ongoing, one-to-one relationship Serve as a positive role model, friend, resource, and guide Build the relationship by planning and participating in activities together Strive for mutual respect Build self-esteem and motivation Work with HCP staff through emails, phone calls, personal conferences, and group meetings to help set goals and work toward accomplishing them Accept and relate to youth who may not share the volunteer’s lifestyle and values Respect the mentee’s right to self-determination and independence Have fun together Mentor Qualifications Be at least 21 years of age and have at least a high school diploma or GED Have an acceptable driving record and background check Willing to adhere to all Hope Center mentoring program policies and procedures Have a valid driver’s license, safe/reliable transportation, and proof of auto insurance, and be willing and able to provide transportation for mentee to and from meetings and activities Time Commitment Make a long term commitment lasting at least one-year, but ideally longer Volunteer will work with program staff and young person to develop a schedule that best fits the needs of the young person Attend an initial three-hour volunteer orientation training session Communicate regularly with program staff
