Mission Statement

When residents of the Belmont-Cragin and Galewood-Monclare neighborhoods on the Northwest side of Chicago organized to address the growing employment crisis facing their neighborhoods, over and over again, residents shared stories about their dire situation. The World of Opportunity was established as a project of the Salesians of Don Bosco, when it became clear that something had to be done in the short-term to help people find good jobs, before seeking solutions to the larger employment issues.

The primary aim of this program is to guide young adults to an awareness of possibilities for a better future. We strive to accomplish this by providing career training and job placement assistance, as well as other services deemed necessary to make the participants viably competitive with the needs of the community. The World of Opportunity has the ability of taking many families from a future of poverty to one of self-sufficiency. From a life of dependency, to a life of contribution to our society.

Description

Our first priority is to provide entry-level career training to participants, followed by job placement assistance. Participants enrolled in the career training program have two options in which to pursue: a home improvement course or the office technology course. The Home Improvement Course consists of, but is not limited to, electrical, plumbing and the carpentry trades. The Office Technology Course offers participants the opportunity to learn about Operating Systems and common business applications like the Microsoft Office suite.
