Mission Statement

-Mission: To create tools for individuals to thrive, prosper and succeed through education, mentoring and community outreach

Description

We are dedicated to creating opportunities to reach the community using education for adults and children. We engage in community outreach and collaboration to increase literacy and self-esteem. We believe in mentoring and creating events and activities where families can spend time together in positive nurturing environments.

Our Projects:

Each summer we host a 6 week summer program called the Freedom School, which serves children ages 6-14 years old. We hire mentor teachers and maintain a 1:10 ratio of teacher to students. We help our students develop in literacy and leadership. Community leaders come as Guest Readers every day to uplift and inspire. We provide healthy meals each day to increase attentiveness in classroom. We host a family picnic, fish fry, bowl-a-thon and other community events. Over 400 children in two cities have passed through the program. Kern County has very low reading scores and we help make a difference. In 2014 Freedom School will host over 60 scholars at the Bakersfield location.

During the holidays we partner with Dignity Health to serve food baskets to those families who may need a helping hand. Self Empowerment seminars are available for those with chronic illness.

We have several art projects to launch in 2014 with photography and paint.

We make learning and giving back to the community fun and rewarding.
