Mission Statement

The mission of the Orange County Great Park is to develop and operate, preserve and protect the Orange County Great Park for the benefit and enjoyment of all its visitors, those of today and those in the future.

Description

The former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro is being transformed into the first great metropolitan park of the 21st Century--the Orange County Great Park. Located in the geographic center of Orange County, California, halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego, the Great Park is easily accessible to more than 10,000,000 Southern California residents via freeway or railway.

Spanning more than 1,300 acres (nearly twice the size of New York’s Central Park) the Great Park’s award winning master plan embraces environmental sustainability, preserves Orange County’s agricultural heritage, and honors the military history of the former air base, setting a new standard for sustainable park design and urban planning. Upon completion, the Orange County Great Park will join America’s inventory of national treasures and set a new standard for great metropolitan parks around the world.

House produced signature events and recreational programs (concerts and dances, workshops, festivals, sports activites, outdoor movies, and more) bring year-round activity to the space--a commitment to the public that the Orange County Great Park remains open during its development.

The Great Park offers opportunities for volunteers to assist with its signature events and recreational programs.

I came here today and had an awesome time. There were 3 other volunteers and our leader was named Andrew. There were 2 girls there who clearly just wanted their paper signed and get credit but the other volunteer, was amazing and omg she was so nice! I was scheduled to do work from 10am-12pm but she was going to stay until 3pm and so I decided to stay until 3 with her as well. We collected fallen oranges from the orchard and placed them in the compost pile. Then we had to turn over the compost pile. Definitely having to turn over the pile was incredibly tiring haha but overall it was fun. After turning it over we then had to tidy up the walkway and make it look more inviting to visitors and just in general have it nice looking. Not gonna lie it, once it was over I was definitely tired lol but don't be discouraged, I would definitely recommend you go out and volunteer here! :D P.S. probably wear some working boots because your shoes will get dirty lol

The volunteer coordinator and support staff were very friendly and welcoming upon our arrival to The Great Park to volunteer. My boyfriend and I were tasked with cleaning out the herb beds to be replanted on a later date. It was so fun getting our hands dirty and being one with the earth again. I enjoyed the conversations I shared with the staff and fellow volunteers.
