The Nebraska State Foster Care Review Board's mision is to ensure the best interests of children in out-of-home care are being met through external citizen review, monitoring facilities that house children and youth, maintaining up-to-date data on a statewide tracking system, and disseminating data and recommendations through an annual report.
The Nebraska Foster Care Review Board reviews cases of children in out of home care to ensure that children do not languish in foster care, that children, their families and foster families get the services they need. The local boards are made up of voluteers that have completed training to review cases. The Foster Care Review Board strives to recruit volunteers from different socioeconomic levels, as well as a variety of racial and occupational backgrounds that relect the makeup of the community as a whole. Local review Boards are central to the review process. Local Boards review the cases of children and youth who are under the care of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, the Office of Juvenile Services, the Courts and private agencies. The Local Board's findings and recommendations are submitted to the Court, the Attorney's the NHHS caseworker and other legal parties in the case. Prior to serving on a local Board, volunteers will be required to complete an application, submit to a Child Protective Services check, sign a confidentiality affidavit and complete the training program. Volunteer Board members donate 10 to 12 hours each month to attend and prepare for a monthly meeting.
