This position enables individuals with special needs to gain confidence and self esteem. Sidewalker volunteers are directly responsible for the student rider. The sidewalker should help the student focus his/her attention on the instructor and assist in completing the assignment. There may be one or two sidewalker's per student. A horse leader volunteer's responsibility is the horse. Lead horse in arena with student riding and one or two sidewalkers helping student. Leader is controlling horse for safety of rider and sidewalkers but allowing rider to perform instructors commands up to their ability. Must keep aware of horses attitude. Also be aware of rider and what is happening around the horse. Saddling and grooming sometimes. Volunteers are needed for 6 week classes.

Birthright is looking for volunteer office staff. Qualifications include a heart for helping others, especially young women. Training will be provided. Minimum age of 18. A volunteer is also needed to be a Spanish to English Translator to help translate between clients coming to the agency and the volunteer on staff at the time of their visit. Volunteer would help twice a month (the dates are flexible) from 1p-5p.

The Healthy Families Advisory Council serves as advisors to the home visitation program. This program works with prenatal or families with newborns until the child is 3 years old. The program is focused on strengthening family functioning and stability in order to prevent children from experiencing abuse/neglect. Advisory Council Members attend a quarterly meeting to provide feedback on program operations, learn how the program is impacting the community and learn of volunteer opportunities that are needed. The Advisory Council members can provide support to Family Time socialization events that occur 6 times per year. The membership is ongoing.

The volunteer advocates to protect the rights, dignity, and safety of residents in long-term care facilities. Without the volunteer, many residents do not have anyone to support them or help them get their needs addressed. Each certified volunteer ombudsman has legislative authority to enter their assigned facility and see all residents in order to fulfill the program's mission. Duties: 1. Spend a minimum of one hour per week at a local assigned long-term care facility. 2. Visit with residents and identify concerns. 3. Encourage self-advocacy and interaction between residents, staff, and community. 4. Receive, investigate, and resolve complaints made by or on behalf of residents in the facility. 5. Identify concerns with facility staff members. 6. Promote respect between facility residents and staff. 7. Maintain confidentiality. 8. Submit a brief monthly report. 9. Attend monthly meetings as volunteer's schedule allows. Qualifications: 1. Total of 36 hours completed. At least 20 hours of classroom/zoom training, at least 10 hours in the field shadowing an experienced ombudsman, up to 7 hours of independent study/homework, and pass exam to be certified by the State Ombudsman. 2. Must have transportation to and from the facility. 3. Must be able to pass a KBI background check and provide references. 4. Must be able to communicate well and maintain confidentiality. 5. Required to have 18 hours of on-going training each year after the first year. Dates Needed: Volunteer can set their own schedule according to what is convenient for them. Time Needed: Volunteer can set their own schedule according to what is convenient for them. Where to Report: After training, volunteers will be orientated to the facility by the regional ombudsman. A contact person at the facility will be identified at that time.

Volunteers grocery shop twice a month on the first and third week of each month for people who are aged 65 and isolated, and/or have significant health issues. Qualifications: Must have a valid Drivers licence. Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 lbs, be dependable, patient with seniors, own vehicle and be detail oriented. Must successfully pass application and background screenings. Days/Dates Needed: Volunteers will shop any time for their matched senior during the first and third week of each month.

As a result we extend the human capacity of area non-profit and governmental agencies by recruiting volunteers to fill a wide variety of volunteer positions in the community.

The Volunteer Center recruits, refers and supports volunteers for the betterment of the community. The Center is home of the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), the Volunteer Action Corps (VAC), Friends in Action and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program in Reno County, Kansas.
