Mission Statement

The mission of Newark Now is to equip and empower Newark residents with the tools and resources to transform their communities through neighborhood associations, tenant organizations and community groups. Our core belief is that every Newark neighborhood has the capacity to be livable and that all it takes are a few dedicated, skilled residents to begin the process. Newark Nowâ s work is rooted in three tenets that include. â ¢ Every Newark resident has the power to transform his/her neighborhood. â ¢ Every Newark neighborhood should and can be livable. â ¢ Every Newark resident has the power and ability to lead. Newark Now supports the work of our community partners through a simple motto: BUILD. BROKER. ADVOCATE. UNITE. This motto keeps us in tune with our mission. Through this motto, Newark Now provides all of our community partners with basic services to help them grow and strengthen â strategic planning, creative problem-solving, community organizing and outreach, neighborhood research, program development, capacity building and leadership development.

Description

Founded in 2003 by former city-councilman Cory Booker, Newark Now supports the work of more than 20 grassroots organizations throughout the city of Newark. In conjunction with our community partners, we have achieved the following: raised more than $50,000 on behalf of grassroots community groups throughout the city of Newark; provided thousands of young people with recreational opportunities through our partner organizations; provided technical assistance to more than thirty grassroots community groups to realize their missions for neighborhood improvement; provided free tax service to more than 50 Newarkers through our Volunteer Tax Assistance Site for low income Newark residents; acted as an intermediary to provide legal services to dozens of low-income Newarkers; provided hundreds of children in distressed neighborhoods with family oriented empowerment activities through the popular "Message in the Hood" community series in partnership with Heru's Army; recognized the work of dozens of exemplary community leaders through the Spirit of Newark Awards; provided hundreds of Newarkers with basic organizing skills through our Grassroots Leadership Institute; provided hundreds of distressed Newark families with Turkeys for the Thanksgiving Holiday and thousands of young people with holiday gifts during the Holiday Season. We offer our services to a broad group of community partners. Newark Now's community partners include neighborhood, tenant and community organizations that work to improve the quality of life in Newark's neighborhoods.
