The National "I Have a Dream" Foundation Mission Statement
The National "I Have a Dream" Foundation helps children reach their education and career goals by providing a long-term program of mentoring, tutoring, and enrichment with an assured opportunity for higher education.
Local "I Have a Dream" Projects adopt an entire same-grade from an elementary school or an entire age group from a public housing development. They work with this group of children (the "Dreamers") and their families year-round from their elementary school years through college.
With over 200 Projects in 64 cities across 27 states (75 of which are currently active), "I Have a Dream" has now served over 15,000 students during its more than two decades of operation.
"I Have a Dream" Foundation-NY East Harlem Program
The mission of the "I Have a Dream" Foundation-NY East Harlem Program is to imbue children with the knowledge, intellectual curiosity, and fortitude to reach their potential.
Two consecutive classes of first grade children living in the East Harlem have the opportunity to participate in the "I Have a Dream" Program. This comprehensive after-school program fosters academic, creative, civic, personal, and social development. We provide Dreamers with tutoring, remedial instruction, arts and recreation activities, mentoring, and mental health services.
Recognizing that family and community involvement is crucial to a child’s success, The "I Have a Dream" Foundation-NY East Harlem Programoffers a network of support and services for families. Family members are encouraged to be active participants and work closely with the "I Have a Dream" staff. A diverse group of volunteers and interns bring their strengths and passions to the program.
