Mission Statement

The mission of Star House is to provide a group home environment in which abused and traumatized children, ages five through twelve, receive arts-based clinical treatment in order to heal and to grow. In addition it is our goal to seek reunification with family resources using therapy, education and community support.

Description

Star House is a transitional program for children being released from psychiatric hospital who require long term treatment. It is the goal of the program to prepare children for family reunification, foster placement, or adoptive placement. Star House prepares children for a home setting by providing a program that emphasizes community living. Families are informed during assessment of the critical need for their involvement in all therapeutic activities at Star House. Family therapy is a key aspect of our clinical model. In order for Star House to achieve its mission, we seek to serve families that have a sincere interest in reunification and a commitment to treatment. The program recognizes the unique gifts of each child and places great emphasis on building the inherent creative strengths of the individual through the use of expressive therapy modalities including art, drama, music, movement, poetry and storytelling. Star House policy believes that children develop emotional intelligence by practicing skills that are based on the following five elements: self awareness, motivation, self regulation, empathy, and adeptness in relationships.

I am a musician and singer/songwriter and a music teacher. I think healing comes from the arts. I think this is a wonderful program. I wish there were more like it.
