Mission Statement

Our Mission is to help older adults with Alzheimer's and related dementias to maintain and/or improve their level of functioning so they can enjoy their later years.

We believe that human beings, regardless of age or degree of impairment, can benefit from continuing to participate in the life of a community where they are accepted and have opportunities to experience a sense of purpose and success. Our members are not pressured to be anyone they are not, and they are encouraged to be everything they can.

Description

New York Memory Center, formerly Park Slope Geriatric Day Center, was established in 1983 as a freestanding, nonprofit, community-based agency to provide services to older adults who have "aged out" of traditional senior centers but want to stay active in their community. NYMC is a recognized leader in the field. Today we serve adults with Alzheimer's Disease and other forms of dementia. The Lotus Club is for adults with Early Memory Loss. Our programs include therapeutic recreational programming, including yoga, music, dance, art, and exercise. Lunch is proivded, and we offer handicapped accessible transportation to many neighborhoods in Brooklyn. NYMC holds a monthly caregiver support group, offers social work support, and works in partnership with a range of agencies to help families delay institutionalization and reduce the stress of home care.
