Mission Statement
SurfAid is a non-profit humanitarian organization whose aim is to improve the health, wellbeing and self-reliance of people living in isolated regions connected to us through surfing.
Description
SurfAid primarily operates field programs in the Mentawai and Nias Island chains off the coast of Sumatra in Indonesia. SurfAid focuses on improving the health, wellbeing and self-reliance of the Mentawai and Nias people through working to prevent malaria, improving access to clean water and sanitation, as well as implementing mother and child health programs in addition to disaster relief and preparedness programs.
Locally, SurfAid International operates the US Schools Program that uses the challenges and triumphs of SurfAid's work with the people of the Mentawai and Nias Islands as an educational example for action as global citizens. Local schools can use our free online curriculum and work with SurfAid as a business client to provide students opportunities for authentic school-to-work experiences as they relate to jobs in the surf industry. SurfAid also provides free online kits to start your own SurfAid after school club, or a SurfAid College Club.
At SurfAid, we believe that "There's More to Surfing." We engage the local surfing community, the action sports industry and those who want to act as global citizens in monthly Surf 'n' Serve events at beaches throughout San Diego County where volunteers can come to "Surf 'n' Serve" with SurfAid. At each event, 10 free surf lessons are provided on a first come, first served basis. After a beach cleanup all the volunteers are welcome to join us in a group surf.
