Mission Statement

This program trains volunteers to provide education, support and respite for caregivers of those with mid-to-late stages of Alzheimer's disease, other dementias, and the frail elderly. These specially trained volunteers also engage Alzheimer's, dementia and frail elderly patients in creative arts and storytelling. A nurse practitioner is available to offer home visits to patients providing a holistic approach to the treatment of the disease within the context of the patient's life and preferences. This initiative reflects Cabrini's commitment to families, patients and quality care that volunteers and staff provide.

Description

Volunteers provide creative arts services to patients with Alzheimer's disease, other dementias, and the frail elderly and offer their family caregivers education, advocacy and respite care. Volunteers visit patients in their home and in the hospital. Volunteers receive training in the care of patients with Alzheimers disease using creative arts and storytelling techniques to engage the patient. Volunteers hours are flexible. Continuing education and support are provided. We need bilingual (Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Polish and Greek) individuals to join our team of volunteers as well as English speaking volunteers.

THE NEXT TRAINING IS SCHEDULED FOR MONDAY OCTOBER 16TH AND TUESDAY, OCTOBER 17TH AT CABRINI MEDICAL CENTER. WE HAVE PATIENTS IN MANHATTAN AS WELL AS NORTH-WESTERN QUEENS IN NEED OF VOLUNTEERS. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING IN NORTH-WESTERN QUEENS, WE ASK THAT YOU PARTICIPATE IN THE TRAINING THAT WILL BE HELD IN MANHATTAN AND YOU WILL BE ASSIGNED TO A PATIENT WHO LIVES IN NORTH-WESTERN QUEENS.
