The Providence Children's Initiative is a department of Family Service of RI. Our mission is to build social service partnerships that respond creatively to the unmet needs of individuals, families, and the community so that people are able to live independently, advocate for themselves, and better their own lives.
The Walking School Bus has been serving Lower South Providence and its youth since 2012. Our goal is to make sure students are arriving on time to school each morning prepared to start the day.

This is a really cool way to volunteer and make a difference in the community without a huge time commitment. The kids are great, and most know the routine already. You show up and sign in to the school, get a partner and then pick up each child on the determined route. You make a difference by ensuring children attend school and keep parents accountable to taking them to each stop. Also, I think if you sign up for 4 spots (either an hour in the morning or an hour in the afternoon) they pay you! It was really just an hour of fun with kids, knowing I helped a good cause and I could volunteer to do more if I wanted to. Flexible program, great for volunteers :)
