Here's a sample of our volunteer opportunities:VIEW AS
- To serve the community by welcoming people of all ages, incomes, backgrounds and equestrian disciplines through providing affordable quality riding lessons, programs and boarding to the residents of the Philadelphia community and surrounding area.
- To promote and maintain the equestrian heritage of the equestrian facility and Fairmount Park through the repair and beautification of the buildings and grounds.
Northwestern Equestrian Facility (NWEF) is one of the finest equestrian boarding facilities in Philadelphia. We are located at the end of Forbidden Drive in beautiful Fairmount Park and one mile from the center of Chestnut Hill. The facility is a Fairmount Park Property that is leased to Northwestern Stables, Inc., (NWS), a 501c3 Non Profit Organization.
Since 1929, the NWEF has operated under the direction of a community organization offering private boarding and riding lessons. Historically, it has served many other community needs including stable and training center for the Philadelphia Mounted Police horses. Today, NWS continues to provide 400+ equestrian riding lessons to children through a year-round lesson program and a 7-week, full-day summer camp. Both of these programs are in high demand and often produce a waiting list. Our students come from 30 different zip codes from Philadelphia and the surrounding area. We have continued our work with the Philadelphia Parks & Recreations’ Parks and Facilities Department with programs for children through the Police Athletic League (PAL) and the REC program. Our work with the children at the Crefeld School provides a weekly, year-round program through their course curriculum. We continue to partner with the local Boy Scouts by providing project opportunities for their Eagle Scout Badge requirements. We are also proud to announce the Northwestern Stables 4H Club which made its debut in September 2011 with 12 enrollments -- the official 4H equestrian club in Philadelphia County.
NWEF has remained a true community barn, sharing the joys of horseback riding with Philadelphians and the surrounding community, and preserving the history of the Wissahickon Valley.
