Description

The Book Buddies Program is a one-on-one tutoring program designed as an intervention for first and second-grade students who may need additional support to learn to read. The Program was developed by UVA and Charlottesville City Schools and has been used in several Arlington Schools successfully for the past several years. Volunteers make a commitment of 2 hours per week from October through May (1 hour, 2 times a week). The hour session includes a 45 minute lesson with 1 student and 15 minutes of prep/reflection. The volunteer follows a specific lesson plan that is written by the site coordinator. The lesson includes listening to the student reread familiar books, working on sight words and spelling patterns through sorts and games, writing an original sentence (or sentences) and introducing/reading a new book with the student. The site coordinator provides an initial 1 hour training and ongoing guidance/training throughout the year on how to work with the student and on each part of the lesson.
