Mission Statement
New Economics for Women (NEW) is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people help themselves. NEW began in 1985 and was established by five Latinas who asked themselves what were the key ingredients that helped them overcome poverty and become economically self-sufficient. They themselves, had experienced what it was like to live in a one parent household, yet were able to overcome their struggles to succeed. These women acknowledged that affordable housing was a key element for poor working parents to succeed. They decided that they would make the commitment to build affordable and safe housing for single parents in order to help them reach their goals. Before beginning constructions of the housing complex, NEW conducted focus groups to find out what the neighborhood residents really needed and wanted out of a housing complex that would help them obtain they dream. It was discovered that parents felt the need to establish a youth center for to provide their children with tutoring. Several of these single parents were unable to obtain a good education, but wanted this dream to be realized for their children
