Description
Port Houston is a community located four miles east of Downtown Houston with a population of approximately 5,000. The majroity of the residents of Port Houston are Hispanic, and many live below the poverty line. It is plagued by tough issues such as gang violence and prostitution. Many of the children in Port Houston have a parent in jail or other difficult family situation. Completion of the tenth grade is a difficult and lofty goal.
Neighbors in Action offers several programs in its community center. Our Monday night program includes teenager in 7th grade through 10th grade who are broken up into four classes by age and gender. We need volunteers to lead these groups in a 40-minute Bible study from a curriculum that will be provided. Each Monday after bible study there will be 45-minutes for sports or arts and crafts. There is a large park across the street from where the community center is located that provides great space for several different sports. Art projects have been ordered and will be offered to those students who wish to remain inside instead of playing sports. The program starts at 6:00 p.m. and ends around 7:30 p.m. every Monday night.Tuesday night is our children’s program, starting at 6:00 p.m. Our program includes children in Kindergarten through 6th grade who are broken up into classes by age and gender. We need volunteers to lead these groups in a 30-minute Bible study from a curriculum that will be provided followed by crafts, games and snack. The program starts at 6:00 p.m. and ends at 7:30 p.m. every Tuesday night.
We also offer homework help Monday through Thursday from 4.00pm - 5.15pm.
