Mission Statement

The Fairfield Foundation is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization dedicated to the archaeological study of the Burwell plantation in Gloucester County, known as Fairfield/Carter’s Creek. The foundation has launched an extended investigation into all aspects of this colonial plantation, with the goal of studying, preserving, and presenting this new knowledge to the public.

We established the Fairfield Foundation in 2000 as an organization dedicated to archaeological research and public outreach focused on Fairfield Plantation--the ancient home of the Burwell family in Gloucester County. Over the last decade we established innovative, nationally recognized educational programming, developed a dedicated corps of volunteers who have donated over 35,000 hours to our cause, and documented one of the most dynamic colonial landscapes in Virginia. In 2010, we purchased the Edge Hill Service Station to serve as our future headquarters and preservation center. This new location will enable us to carry out our mission for the next ten years and beyond- expanding our role across the Middle Peninsula, helping property owners, educational institutions, and local governments preserve and learn from their historical resources, ensuring they survive for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.
Our first step in this ambitious endeavor is to preserve one of our region’s most iconic resources: the Edge Hill Service Station. As our new
headquarters, it will enhance our access to an increasingly interested public while providing the much needed space to expand our successful
volunteer and educational programming. More than 19,000 commuters and tourists pass this corner every day--and its sensitive and accurate
restoration will serve not only to highlight Fairfield’s efforts, but will represent our region’s dedication to preserving the past for the future. Please help us succeed in this effort to study and preserve the historic resources of Virginia’s Middle Peninsula.
