Description
Pickards Mountain Eco-Institute is on 70 acres of rolling hills and farmland, eight miles west of Chapel Hill and Carrboro, NC. We practice permaculture gardening principles on a farm that grows a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, fruits, nuts, mushrooms, and berries. We have chickens, a jersey milk cow, horses, dogs, and cats. We raise catfish in the pond, which is also great for cool dips in the summer and even cooler dips in the winter. The farm is powered by a 100 kW solar energy system. There are three housing options -- four rooms in a 100 year-old farmhouse, two canvass yurts, and ample tent camping. Nearby Carrboro has a thriving local music scene (see Cat's Cradle) and local food coop (Weaver Street Market)and is the "hooping" capital of America. Expect to work with open-minded young people who wish to live corporate-free. Our farm was inspired by EF Schumacher, Thomas Berry, and all those who understood before we did that our needs can be satisfied with simplicity, knowledge, respect, and compassion.
