Mission Statement

We train tutors who teach adults to read, write and do basic math. SCOLA is a not-for-profit, volunteer based organization that provides confidential literacy instruction to adult residents of Lackawanna County, both native and foreign-born, so that they may acquire the basic reading, writing, and life skills necessary to function effectively in society.

Description

SCOLA promotes literacy for all people through support, training, outreach programs and advocacy. In addition to basic literacy classes, we also offer English classes to non-English speaking adults. Literacy instruction is done on a one-to-one basis. English as a Second Language is taught both in small group and one-to-one. There is also a computer lab for teaching, practice and language reinforcement. The program is goal oriented and individually designed to meet the needs of the individual student.
