Wildfires are devastating communities across California, causing more than 300,000 people to evacuate their homes and threatening many more. The Camp Fire in Northern California -- one of three blazing across the state -- is the most destructive in state history. Lucky Mutts Rescue (www.luckymutts.com) (LMR) is an all-volunteer, 501(c)-3 tax-exempt organization dedicated to reducing the staggering number of abandoned pets by (1) educating people about responsible pet ownership (2) making training more accessible to the rescue community and (3) re-homing adoptable dogs.
Lucky Mutts is built on the premise that helping people take responsibility for their pets -- by offering education, resources, advice and encouragement -- is the key to addressing the combined problems of pet over population and abandonment. Similarly, we believe that nonprofit organizations must run like a successful business, using strong fiscal responsibility, a network of able partners and savvy, hands-on management. This focus on training and responsibility makes Lucky Mutts unique in the rescue community. LMR selects a limited number of adoptable dogs, fosters them in homes, provides training and adoption services. This approach, coupled with a meticulous adoption methodology, makes it possible for LMR to guarantee successful placement. Underscoring this commitment to responsible dog ownership is an absolute commitment to education and training. Lucky Mutts works with leading trainers in the Austin area and also provides services to the rescue community in an effort to make affordable dog training available to the general public.
