Habitat for Humanity

Potomac Habitat is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. A faith-based volunteer housing ministry.

Habitat for Humanity offers a "Hand-up" to low income families that would not be able to obtain a conventional mortgage. A partner family goes through a familiy selection process which includes a background and credit check, one on one counseling and investing hundreds of hours of "sweat equity" into the construction of their own home or the home of another family. These homes are sold to the partner family for a no-interest, no profit mortgage.

Volunteers of Potomac Habitat provide most of the labor for Habitat homes in addition to daily operations and special events.

In addition, Potomac Habitat just opened a Home Improvement Discount ReStore. This ReStore takes used home improvement materials and makes them available for sale to contractors, businesses and families. Volunteers also help keep the store open, answer phones, schedule donation pick-up service, pricing and inventory control. ReStore revenue above ReStore expenses goes into sustaining the organization and in the future will help build/renovate more Habitat homes.
