Facilitating the spiritual, emotional and personal transformation of incarcerated individuals, those formerly incarcerated and their families.
Dedicated to a policy of non-discrimination, Chrysalis Ministries is an interfaith organization which provides support groups, as well as educational, social and religious services, including pastoral care and counseling to the incarcerated, the formerly incarcerated and their families. Chrysalis Ministries has been in existence since 1941 and was formerly known as "Bexar County Detention Ministries".
Chrysalis Ministries provides staff and/or volunteers in 10 detention and treatment facilities in the Bexar County and Karnes County area. Weekly interdenominational services are provided in each facility and pastoral care is provided as needed, seven days per week. Those individuals incarcerated in the Bexar County Adult Detention facility may also participate in faith-based 12-step support groups, as well as ongoing life skills and character development classes.
The Family Renewal Center serves family members of the incarcerated, and individuals formerly incarcerated with (but is not limited to):
Assistance with basic necessities (food, clothing, ID cards, transportation, etc.)
Employment assistance through job readiness, job referrals,
Regular weekly support group meetings for the formerly incarcerated and their family members.
Substance abuse prevention and relapse prevention.
Anger management training.
English as a Second Language.
Licensed mental health counseling.
Public utilities assistance (when funding is available).
Vocational training (when funding is available).
Rental assistance (when funding is available).
Money management classes.
Job readiness classes.
Application assistance (TANF, Medicaid, WIC, etc.)
Seasonal children’s programs.
Chrysalis is governed by a Board of Directors representing many denominational, professional and business interests. We are funded by private donations, church support, corporate gifts and the United Way.
