Mission Statement

The Brain Science Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding a cure for primary brain tumors and to advancing the understanding of brain function as it relates to these tumors. The BSF supports basic and clinical research, promising new diagnostic methods and treatments, and opportunities to improve the quality of patient care.

Description

The Brain Science Foundation makes grants to support brain tumor research, treatment, and patient care. The BSF is able to fill a critical gap by funding innovations and "seed" projects that other granting agencies would not fund until greater evidence of success is generated.

In the past 10 years, the BSF has provided over $12 million in funding for research and patient support. As a result of our funding, researchers have gone on to receive an additional $50 million in continued funding from larger sources, such as the National Institutes of Health, where it is important to validate the science or hypothesis before even being on the radar for funding from such leading entities. BSF funded investigators have received the NIH Director’s New Innovator’s Award, a highly respected distinction in the research world.

Our funding has helped develop cutting edge technologies, including intra-operative imaging which positively impacts the outcome of neurosurgery on a daily basis.

The BSF is committed to innovative science and to advancing the hypotheses of pioneers in the field of brain tumor research. However, at the same time, we have dedicated ourselves to serving as an information clearinghouse for patients and scientists alike. The BSF continues to strive to fill a gap of information available to patients, who so desperately need a place to learn more about their diagnosis. Additionally, we convene numerous education events annually. Our patient education events bring patients, caregivers, scientists, and medical practitioners together to learn more about epidemiology, diagnostic methods, and treatment options, as well as coping strategies for brain tumor patients. We are also pleased to present an advanced training program for seasoned neurosurgeons that trains small groups of physicians to perform a leading edge technique using state of the art technology.
